Some firefighters in Pittsburgh are starting a new support group to target PTSD among first responders.
The group is learning techniques endorsed by the nonprofit group Healing The Hero, WTAE reports. That approach blends traditional therapy with emerging technology to confront PTSD and chronic stress, .
Firefighters and first responders undergo a brain scan using an 18-channel EEG device known as an EVOX that can map indicators of PTSD, anxiety, and depression. Then they are treated with traditional therapy using a Trauma Resilience Protocol. Then follow-up brain scans are used to monitor progress.
In addition, firefighters learn about treatments for some of the diseases that can be tied in with PTSD, such as heart disease, cancer and mental health crises.
Additional support comes from the region’s Critical Incident Stress Management Team, which meets with responders within hours of traumatic calls to steer them toward the resources they need.
