(WENY) — November is Diabetes Awareness Month, and around the holidays, it can be hard to keep your diet in check. So, local doctors have some tips to help prevent and manage type 2 diabetes.
“Managing diabetes is like a puzzle with many pieces. Nutrition is one piece. It’s important to get educated to guide your journey.” The team also highlighted the powerful role of modern technology, such as continuous glucose monitors, in achieving superior control,” said Guthrie Lourdes Hospital Registered Dietitian and Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist Zuge Adolphe.
During a virtual press conference, Guthrie experts discussed the vital need for screening and preventive measures. They said pre-diabetes is often asymptomatic, and roughly 90% of people don’t know they have it.
Doctors said type 2 diabetes risk factors include poor eating and exercise habits, being overweight, and genetics. They said early intervention and education are crucial.
“…You can still eat your favorite foods, you just have to eat a balanced plate and portion sizes, (and) make the best choices and decisions for you,” said Mary Berube, RN, Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist.
Officials encourage people to reach out to their doctor about risk factors, screenings, and questions. They also highlighted the powerful role of technology and how things like continuous glucose monitors can help regulate.
