100 years ago, Winn-Dixie, a grocery store chain, was founded in Miami, Florida. The liquor and grocery store grew into four other Southern states—Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, and Mississippi. But in a rebrand of the company, and an effort to “define a new chapter,” Winn-Dixie announced it will be closing all but five stores outside of its home state of Florida.
“We are accelerating growth where our roots run deepest while staying true to our purpose of feeding and enriching the communities, families and neighbors who have supported us for generations,” said Anthony Hucker, Chairman and CEO of Southeastern Grocers in a press release.
Winn-Dixie Is Closing Dozens of Stores in 5 Southern States
Winn-Dixie has already shuttered more than 90 store locations in 2025, according to data compiled by Usearch. Now, the brand is officially closing up shop in Alabama, Louisiana, and Mississippi, and shutting down all but five stores in Georgia in an effort to focus largely on its Florida locations.
According to the press release, Winn-Dixie will sell or close 32 more stores in Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, and Mississippi. Several of the locations will reopen as new grocery stores, including Piggly Wiggly and Food City. The brand has reached agreements or is advancing plans with multiple grocers, according to Business Wire. Closings are expected to be completed by year-end, with all banner transitions anticipated by early 2026.
